California Considering Bill to Make Retail Toy Departments Gender Neutral

If one California lawmaker gets his way, Barbie dolls and G.I. Joe action figures may soon be cohabitating on the same toy store shelf.

Assemblyman Evan Low has introduced legislation that calls for retailers with at least 500 employees to end the practice of separating toys by gender.

The proposed law claims the practice forces toy manufacturers to market products to either girls or boys, even when they could appeal to both sexes. Per the bill, stores that fail to comply could be slapped with a $1,000 fine.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Low got the idea for the bill from the 9-year-old daughter of one of his staff members. If it's approved, the law would go into effect on January 1st, 2023.
