This Year’s Most Anticipated New Music

2013 is going to be a stellar year for anyone who loves music. Kanye West, Daft Punk, Adele and U2 are all rumored to be putting out new albums in the next 12 months. Fleetwood Mac is going on tour and—who knows—maybe they will head back into the studio. And The Breeders are rehearsing for the 20th Anniversary Last Splash Tour. As long as we are wishful thinking, perhaps 2013 will be the year that Vampire Weekend finally releases a new album. (After all, they did play a new song on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in October.) Perhaps British act Savages will finally put out a full-length. Maybe the Rolling Stones will even headline the Coachella Music Festival….
While it’s easy to speculate about what could happen in the new year, here are 11 albums we know we can get excited about.
Canadian twin-sister act Tegan and Sara might manage one of the most difficult tasks in the music biz this year: crafting an album destined for commercial success that will also appeal to the band’s diehard fanbase. The duo has been a longtime staple of the indie scene, but Heartthrob (out Jan. 29) may be their breakthrough album. We were immediate fans of the infectious debut single “Closer,” as well as the synth-driven tracks “Goodbye, Goodbye” and “Drove Me Wild.” While Heartthrob will undoubtedly go down in the annals of music history as the ultimate break-up compilation (with track names like “I Was a Fool,” “I’m Not Your Hero” and “How Come You Don’t Want Me”), hopefully it will also be the one that finally introduces Tegan and Sara to mainstream audiences.
